Brief Explanation of Abe no Seimei’s ShinsungHwa

A powerful spiritual presence has manifested within the spiritual core at the composition’s apex. This entity radiates intense energy and appears deeply connected to Abe no Seimei. The spiritual abilities attributed to Abe no Seimei seem intrinsically linked to this presence. Most striking is the coiled energy field that envelops the entire form—distinct spiraling patterns that shouldn’t be confused with kundalini, but rather represent energy visualized in its literal coiled manifestation. Energy streams forth from the hands while additional currents flow upward, creating a dynamic field of spiritual force.

Abe no Seimei: Japan’s Greatest Magical Hero

In medieval Japan, stories tell of fox spirits becoming mothers, protective stars keeping evil at bay, and one man who could call upon invisible helpers to solve mysteries. That man was Abe no Seimei—Japan’s most famous onmyoji, or court magician, from over a thousand years ago.

Who Was This Legendary Figure?

Born February 21, 921 AD, during Japan’s peaceful Heian period, Abe no Seimei was no fantasy character. He served the emperor as an onmyōji—a court official blending fortune-telling, astronomy, and magical counsel into one remarkable profession.

Seimei lived to 84 without serious illness, extraordinary for his era. People saw this as proof of his supernatural abilities. When he died in 1005, Emperor Ichijō honored him by building a shrine in Kyoto on the exact site of Seimei’s former home.

The Ancient Art of Onmyōdō

Seimei mastered Onmyōdō, “The Way of Yin and Yang”—an intricate system imported from China that merged astronomy, calendar-making, and divination. Practitioners could read the stars to determine lucky travel days or dangerous directions.

Onmyōji held crucial responsibilities: creating calendars, predicting eclipses, performing protective ceremonies against evil spirits, and advising emperors on optimal timing for major decisions. They even predicted unborn babies’ gender—truly magical for that time.

The Fox Spirit Mother

Legend claims Seimei’s parentage was extraordinary. While his father, Abe no Yasuna, was human, his mother was Kuzunoha—a kitsune (fox spirit) capable of transforming into a beautiful woman.

Recognizing her son’s destiny, the fox mother entrusted young Seimei to master teacher Kamo no Tadayuki. By age five, Seimei could see demons and spirits invisible to others. This supernatural heritage granted him abilities beyond ordinary humans.

Magical Powers and Spirit Helpers

Seimei’s talents were extraordinary. He predicted futures through stellar observation, located lost objects, and influenced unborn children’s gender through his prophecies. Most remarkable were his twelve shikigami—invisible spirit assistants only he could command.

These magical helpers spied on enemies, delivered messages, and handled dangerous tasks. While invisible to most, Seimei could manifest them through special paper dolls. His personal symbol, the five-pointed Seiman star, represented nature’s five elements: water, fire, earth, metal, and wood. Today, it’s still known as the “Seal of Abe no Seimei.”

Epic Magical Battles

Seimei’s rivalry with fellow onmyōji Ashiya Dōman created legendary tales. Dōman, jealous of Seimei’s success, constantly challenged him.

In their most famous contest, Dōman secretly placed fifteen oranges in a box, then “predicted” their exact number. But Seimei saw through the deception. Using his powers, he transformed the oranges into rats. When the box opened to reveal fifteen scurrying rodents instead of fruit, Dōman was utterly defeated.

This story showcases not only Seimei’s magical abilities but his sharp wit and quick thinking.

Over a millennium later, Abe no Seimei remains beloved. Kyoto’s Seimei Shrine draws thousands annually, especially during autumn equinox festivals. Visitors see the magical well where Seimei performed ceremonies and the bridge connecting our world to the spirit realm.

His story has inspired countless books, films, anime, and video games. In the 1990s, Olympic figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu created a famous “Seimei” performance in his honor. This ancient magician continues captivating global audiences, proving some legends are truly timeless.
